Usafi na usalama wa chakula ni muhimu kwa kila mtu japo hapa namlenga zaidi mgonjwa wa saratani.  Hii ni kwa sababu kinga ya mwili ya mgonjwa wa saratani imepungua kutokana na ugonjwa, kwa hiyo lazima ajitahidi sana kuzingatia usafi na usalama wa chakula.  Pamoja na kutimiza kanuni zote za usafi wa mikono, vyombo, mazingira na maji ya kunywa, ni muhimu kuwa mwangalifu sana wakati tunapotayarisha au kutumia vile vyakula ambavyo kwa kawaida vina hatari kubwa zaidi ya maambukizi hasa ya magonjwa (hasa “salmonella”).  Vyakula hivyo ni nyama yoyote mbichi (ikiwepo  nyama ya kuku), mayai mabichi na samaki wabichi.

Kutokana na tafiti nyingi zilizofanyika, wataalamu  wameona kwamba kitendo cha mama kumnyonyesha mtoto kwa matiti yake huchangia katika kupunguza uwezekano wa mama kupata saratani (cancer) ya matiti.  (World Cancer Research Fund; http://www.wcrf.org/). Imeonekana kwamba sasa kuna uthibitisho mkubwa kuhusu jambo hili.

Nafaka zisizokobolewa (whole grains), aina mbali mbali za kunde na maharage (legumes) zimeonekana kuupa mwili afya bora na faida nyingi sana ikiwepo kuzuia baadhi ya saratani (cancer).  Tujizoeshe kula na tufurahie kula vyakula hivi.  Nafaka zisizokobolewa ni kama unga wa dona, mkate wa brauni (uliotengenezwa na ngano ambayo haikukobolewa sana), mchele wa brauni na ulezi, pia mtama (sorghum) au uwele ambao haukukobolewa. Jamii za mikunde zinahusisha maharage, kunde, mbaazi, njugu mawe, choroko, fiwi, dengu, njegee kavu nk.

It is important to know what poses high risk for cancer and perhaps more important is to know what can be done to reduce that risk.  When you know both the risk and how to minimize it, you stand a better chance of success in avoiding it.  Sometimes the truth is not very interesting, but I still have to tell the hard truth … Ha! Ha! Ha!

Processed meat is loved by many. In some cases it is viewed as prestigious food especially for some in Tanzania. Perhaps this is because in our society, it is mostly those in the higher income bracket who can afford it.  The bad news is that experts now have a come up with strong evidence that processed meats are a high risk for cancer especially colorectal cancer.
